MTHFR and Mental Illness

MTHFR and Mental Illness

Kristin Lasseter, MD

About our current read

This article by Traci Stein PhD, MPH discusses the importance of the MTHFR gene mutations in mental illness.

What we love about it

Dr. Stein gives the reader some background knowledge about genetics and biology, and the relevance of the MTHFR gene.

Take away point

MTHFR genetic mutations can decrease ones ability to form l-methylfolate which impacts the levels of serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine - neurotransmitters that play a primary role in various mental illnesses. If you suffer from mental illness, migraines or miscarriages, it may be worth speaking to your doctor about whether or not you should be tested for this mutation.
